Inductions are required for a few of the Machines/Equipment at the hackspace.

This is due to :-
* Difficulty of use
* Basic Safety (for yourself and the Hackspace)
* Cost of running and or repairing

The Machines/Equipment that need an induction are :-

Important Information
Leeds Hackspace takes no responsibility for anything which which is stored on the premises, and you are personally responsible for everything that you leave here. If you aren't happy with the potential that something will go missing or will otherwise be damaged you must not leave it in a public space.

The Directors & Management Committee reserve the right to refuse to allow the storage of anything on Leeds Hackspace premises for reasons of safety of either the premises or members. If readily identifiable the owner will be informed and given a reasonable time period to remove the item(s), otherwise a wider announcement to members will be made. If the item(s) are not removed within the period defined then the Management Committee will dispose of them appropriately.

The Directors & Management Committee reserve the right to inspect anything left stored on Leeds Hackspace premises.

Member Storage
Based on Andy's proposal, we now have over 100 spaces large enough to accommodate a 35 litre box or some other amount of stuff. Everything must fit inside the allocated slot. If it does not fit in the slot then please refer to the Large Project Storage section below.

Members are welcome to personalise their slot by fitting a door. Mounting/fitting guides will be published, talk to Andy Sloss (Andy51055) if you want to get involved in this.

* We will endeavour to make sure each member is one slot as a condition of membership.
* When you are no longer a member you no longer have a right to store anything at the Hackspace.
* If you are using more than one slot you will be asked to make way for other members should the need arise. You will be informed by email if you need to vacate a slot. Please be considerate and don't take up a lot of space.
* Print a label using the label printer, stick it above your slot (or on your door)
* Approximately 415mm x 350 mm x 500mm deep. Will comfortably fit a 35 litre Really Useful Box.
* Everything must fit inside the slot. Anything which sticks out of the slot or is left on the floor will be put in the box of shame by the door. The box of shame will be emptied every Open Saturday.
* Do not store any food.
* Do not store anything dangerous. Use your common sense.
* Do not take anything from anyone's slot without prior permission. This is a serious offence and may result in referral to the Complaints procedure.

Clear Desk Policy
If anything is left out on the desks it will be swept into the week’s box of shame.

There are four boxes of shame. They are rotated on a Tuesday before every open night in a conveyor belt fashion. If you leave something out, look for it in the boxes. You have three to four weeks to retrieve anything from the boxes of shame before it is split apart for reuse or thrown away, which occurs when the box moves from the last slot back to the first slot.

If you have lost something check the Boxes of Shame.

Chemical Storage
Please store chemicals in the large metal cabinet located in the workshop.

* You are required to put your name on it, unless for general workshop use.
* Mark the containers very clearly if they are not for general use.
* The Directors & Management Committee may refuse to store any chemical at the Space. See the Important Information notice above.

Large Project Storage (LPS)*
The infrastructure for this section is not entirely robust yes. Please bear with us while we get this sorted out.

If your project won’t fit in the member storage slot then it’s time to fill out a Large Project Storage Proposal form. If your thing is going to disappear within 48 hours, you don’t need to request storage.

This isn’t meant to be an arduous or intimidating process.

* Fill out the form with your name, the nature of the project, ideal storage area and the expected end date.
* The form will email the mailing list.
* If no-one has any objections within 48 hours then go for it, you’re automatically approved.
* Grab one of the luggage tags and fill it in, attach it to your project somehow so we know who is responsible for what.
* Project taking a bit longer than you thought? Not a problem. Just keep the mailing list up to date with developments and update the expected end date.

The default state for a LPS request after 24 hours is “Approved” if there is no negative response on the mailing list. After negative response a Management Committee member will intervene with either an Approved or Not Approved status.

Large projects will be audited regularly by the Management Committee on a hack-the-space day. These happen every couple of months, usually coinciding with a Saturday open day. If a Large Project appears to be abandoned (i.e. the luggage tag hasn’t been updated in a while, nobody has seen the owner in months) then the Management Committee will take appropriate measures to get in touch with the owner. If we can’t get in touch with the owner after a period of time then don’t be surprised if the project is disposed of.

Members on the mailing list are welcome to reject a request on grounds of safety (I want to store a large quantity of chlorine gas in a rusty gas cylinder of questionable heritage), inconvenience (I want to store 500 scaffolding poles) or time scale (I would like to store this project for 3 months while this super-strong but super-slow acting glue cures).

We’ve got this super-cool new hackspace with loads of space, let’s not just let it get filled with forgotten projects and associated detritus. An upside of this process is that we get to know what cool things everyone is working on!

We’ve cribbed a lot of this from London Hackspace. No shame.

George's Drone Request is a good early example of how Large Project Storage will work out.

Large Tool Storage
If you have tools that you would like to loan to the Hackspace on a long term basis, please email directors@leedshackspace.org.uk. Although it will avoided, Leeds Hackspace takes no responsibility for any damage that might occur to tools loaned to the space.
MWainwrighthttps://wiki.leedshackspace.org.uk/w/index.php?title=Complaints&diff=2638Complaints2023-06-13T23:07:38Z
MWainwright: removed out of date information.

Complaints Policy
Leeds Hackspace aims to be an inclusive community where all visitors (both members and guests) feel welcome.

If members feel unhappy about anything in the hackspace, or they are having difficulties getting along with other members or a discussion has broken down and agreement cannot be found, we encourage them to speak to the directors and committee members via directors@leedshackspace.org.uk who will work to reach amicable solutions for any issues brought to them.

However should it be more appropriate complaints may still be made by any person by emailing the Management Committee at directors@leedshackspace.org.uk. Each complaint raised is taken seriously.

Reasonable steps will be taken by the Management Committee to resolve the complaint informally before the start of this process.

The Complaints Process
* Complaints and breaches of The Rules are dealt with by the Management Committee. If a member of the Management Committee is subject to a complaint, then this will preclude them from taking part in the complaints process.
* The Management Committee will meet (either virtually or physically) to decide on the outcome of the complaint, taking into consideration as much information as possible.
* If the complaint is upheld then the offender will receive a written warning, delivered by e-mail to the address registered with the Hackspace.
* In the case of repeat offences the Management Committee may take the additional step of banning the member for a period of time. The default period of a ban is 6 months, adjustable by majority vote of the Management Committee.
* Certain exceptional circumstances may result in an immediate ban. This requires a majority vote of the Management Committee.
* Where appropriate sanctions short of a ban may be enforced - options include:
** Revoking 24 hour access to the Hackspace
** Revoking access to controlled-access tools (via the AccessNode system)
* The membership will be updated on the process of ongoing complaints to a detail which is deemed in the interest of all involved.
* The complainant will receive a reply with the result of the meeting, detailing the decision made and the reasoning behind it..
* Where a complaint is not upheld, but it is believed by the Management Committee that there was genuine concern and no malicious intent on the part of the complainant then no further action will be taken.
* Only where false allegations are made maliciously will it be considered appropriate to act against the complainant.

Banning a person from the Hackspace
* Barring exceptional circumstances a person will receive two written warnings before they are banned.
* The Management Committee reserves the right to ban anyone from entering Leeds Hackspace and to revoke membership from any person where it is decided to be in the best interest of Leeds Hackspace and its members.
* When a person is banned their right to access the Leeds Hackspace premises is revoked, and any access to the premises without prior approval of the Management Committee will be considered trespass.

Openness & Transparency
Leeds Hackspace is working to become an open and transparent organisation, but there are obvious restrictions on the amount of information that can be shared publicly about complaints. The trustees will not discuss a complaint with anyone not involved in the process.

A public register of complaints and bans is maintained on the Wiki.

We are currently using Slack on a trial basis as a better interface to our IRC channel.

Our Slack channel is intended to be used as a bridge to our IRC channel, providing better support for mobile users, and modern features like auto-expanding images and web links. There is no plan to fully migrate to Slack.

It's best to avoid using Slack features that aren't accessible to IRC users, such as creating other channels.

Get an invite
Head to this handy page in order to receive an invite to our Slack "team".

Download Slack apps for your devices
Slack is available as a download for most popular platforms, including Windows, Linux, OS X, Android and iOS.

Slack trial
Evaluation of the Slack trial can be found here

IRC mirroring
We have a bot that mirrors conversation between Slack and IRC, allowing people on either platform to talk to each other. Images uploaded to Slack are automatically mirrored to Imgur for the benefit of IRC users. Joins and parts are not shown in Slack as it'd generate too much noise in the channel.

Set a Username
Slack uses a background username which it tries to guess based on your email address. Whilst this doesn't get shown much in the slack app, it does get used as part of the IRC mirror.
If you sign up with an email like "hackspace@yourdomain.com" then your username gets set to "hackspace" which causes a lot of confusion and problems.

https://leedshackspace.slack.com/account/settings -> Scroll to the bottom and you can check/change hte username that you're using on slack.
Please don't use common words or anything that could be misunderstood as being an official hackspace username.
MWainwrighthttps://wiki.leedshackspace.org.uk/w/index.php?title=Warnings_and_Bans&diff=2594Warnings and Bans2022-05-05T15:08:22Z
MWainwright: removed warning and ban information that was well past its reasonable date for display

Leeds Hackspace is a workshop space for people that like making things, are curious about how stuff works, or would like to learn new skills.

Membership is open to all and we are a not-for-profit organisation entirely run by its community.

We are interested in technology (both new and old) but are also a social group of people who enjoy talking and bouncing ideas/questions off of one another.

Everyone is welcome (and encouraged) to have a wiki account. Please ask in IRC/Slack or email the directors.
